Europa – Driving Physics & Gameplay

Another Europa Video! The car physics in my Europa Concept were incredibly basic. I’ve spent a good amount of time refining the vehicle physics for the full game and this is the result. This does away with the built in physics engine in Unity and uses their pacejka tire model implementation instead. It’s good. Really really good. After reading up on the Pacejka tire models (Hans B. Pacejka) I’ve come to the conclusion that he is some sort of alien intelligence sent from outer space.

Anyway, you can see the results of the new jeep handling on some suitable slippy terrain and in a low gravity as you would expect on a moon the size of Europa in this video. I still haven’t fully finalized the physics model and will probably adjust the torque and grip to move away from reality a little bit just to ease some of the frustrations. It will be your main mode of transportation around the play area so it needs to feel perfect.
